32 – Beating the Deferral: How to Get Accepted After Being Deferred

Deferrals are an unfortunate part of the early application process. You worked so hard on that early application to just be shoved in with all of the regular decision applicants. Yes, we feel the pain as we can relate all too well. You can act two ways after being deferred: be discouraged or keep fighting. If you want to keep fighting, you’ve come to the right place. In this episode we’ll discuss ways to give your deferred application the best chance possible in the regular decision round and also offer advice on how to approach the rest of your applications. It’s almost over, just keep fighting a bit longer!

31 – It’s Not You, It’s Me: Writing Why College Supplements

One of the most common supplemental essay prompts colleges ask is the Why College prompt? These are often the most difficult essays to write because you want to be original, but not too original. In this episode, we talk about the importance of this essay, researching reasons to go to a school, structuring this essay in an anecdotal format, released essays from Tufts, and, finally, the worst mistake students make: talking only about the school and not about themselves as well. Michael tries to explain with a dating analogy; let’s see how that goes.

29 – Johns Hopkins Released Essays Part 2

Johns Hopkins releases essays from previous admitted students. These can be great sources of inspiration and advice. In this episode of the podcast, we read the first few released essays and discuss what we like about them. Michael pulls out his AP Language cards and does some English teacher worthy rhetorical analysis. Nhi and Dominic comment on how the topics seem to encapsulate a clear narrative. And we all wish we could write this well.
